To usher in the Year of the Tiger, we conducted the ‘SIS My H.E.R.O. Mindset Virtual Lunar New Year Celebration’ on 元宵节 (Yuan Xiao Jie, also known as the Lantern Festival).

Our theme this year is ‘Braving through the Year of the Tiger’, as the tiger embodies courage and bravery, which encourages us to continue to be strong and resilient despite these challenging times.

This is in line with My H.E.R.O. Mindset, which focuses on being positive in life despite the challenges faced. This ultimately helps us to strive towards and achieve our goals in life, both personally and professionally.

As part of our celebration, students participated in a trivia quiz and made paper crafts related to lanterns and tigers. Students’ performances were also showcased as part of our Lunar New Year Musical Challenge.

Math Heuristics for Problem Solving

One key aspect of Singapore Math is the development of students’ critical thinking skills (a 21st Century Skill) through the use of math heuristics.

Math Heuristics are strategies that students can use to solve complex word problems, which can be solved in several ways using different heuristics, or by using a combination of heuristics.

To solve word problems efficiently, students must be familiar with both the problem-solving methods (heuristics) and the problem-solving process.

In Singapore Math, there are 12 heuristics in the Primary Math syllabus that can be grouped into four main categories:

1) To give a representation:

– Draw a diagram/model

– Draw a table

– Make a systematic list

2) To make a calculated guess:

– Look for pattern(s)

– Guess and Check

– Make suppositions

3) To go through the process:

– Act it out

– Work backwards

– Use the ‘Before-After’ concept

4) To change the problem:

– Restate the problem in another way

– Simplify the problem

– Solve part of the problem

Here are some examples of the heuristic ‘Act It Out’ that we go through during Math class.

To celebrate the end of 2021, we conducted our virtual Christmas celebration with the theme ‘My H.E.R.O. Mindset’.

The H.E.R.O. Mindset is about being aware of and focusing on how being positive is important, not just for our mental health but to help us strive and achieve our goals in life, both personally and professionally.

The H.E.R.O. Mindset helps us to emphasise on:

– HOPE in order to build motivational and goal-engaged energy

– to apply ENERGY to a set goal and detail the necessary tasks to achieve it

– to build RESILIENCE and let stress work for us instead of working against us

– to have OPTIMISM and anticipate the best possible outcome

RVi Yangon Virtual Thadingyut Ceremony (30 October 2021)

In Myanmar, teachers are greatly respected and revered, and are accorded with the highest reverence, together with the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Sangha, and one’s parents.

Every year, during the month of Thadingyut, homage paying ceremonies are held all over the country where during such ceremonies, students affirm their love and respect for their teachers and parents and seek their forgiveness for any misconduct during the past year.

The RVi Yangon team conducted our annual Paying Homage Ceremony on 30 October 2021 to remind our students to not only love and respect their teachers, but also their parents as well, and we are glad that even our non-Buddhist students, parents and teachers take part in our ceremony every year.

On behalf of the RVi Group in Yangon, we will like to thank all students from SIS and RVi Institute, and their families, for attending our ceremony this year. May everyone be blessed with good health and prosperity.
